Friend of God

We sing a song at church called 'I Am A Friend Of God'. I love that song and I love the idea of being God's friend. James 2:23 says "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness," and he was called God's friend. In John 15 he says, "This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you. You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you. These things I command you, that you love one another." To be His friend we have to love one another. One of Christ's two commandments. Of course we know we're His children but being a friend in addition to being His child is even more intimate, an even more secure relationship. It's almost overwhelming to think that Almighty God, the Creator of the Universe would be so mindful of us that He would want to be our friend. Friends talk to each other and confide in each other. Friends think alike. Friends are loyal and dependable and they support each other. God wants to have that kind of relationship with us. We just have to do our part.
